Introduction

The first day of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Shailputri, the daughter of the Himalayas. Her name means “Daughter of the Mountain”. She is depicted riding a bull, holding a trident in one hand and a lotus in the other. On this day, devotees begin their spiritual journey of Navratri by invoking her blessings.

Significance of Maa Shailputri

Maa Shailputri represents purity, strength, and grounding. She is associated with the Muladhara Chakra (Root Chakra), symbolizing stability and balance. Worshipping her on the first day is believed to remove fear, provide strong foundations in life, and bless children and families with discipline and harmony.

Rituals for Day 1

  • Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana): Devotees establish a sacred Kalash, symbolizing divine energy for all nine days.
  • Offerings: White flowers, pure ghee, and cow’s milk are offered.
  • Mantra Chanting: Reciting “Om Devi Shailputryai Namah” brings peace and strength.
  • Fasting: Many devotees observe fasts, consuming fruits and milk.
